Debate in the Lords on wheelchair and community equipment
The APPG for Access to Disability Equipment is grateful to all the parliamentarians who contributed to the debate on wheelchair and community equipment services and would like to express our gratitude to Lord Hunt for tabling the debate.
We would like to thank Lord Shinkwin, Lord Rennard, Lord Harries of Pentregarth, Baroness Brinton for their contributions, many of which referenced our recent report and the experiences of people who rely on timely access to equipment.
Across the debate, Peers highlighted the very real consequences of delays in equipment provision, including delayed hospital discharge, loss of independence, social isolation, deteriorating physical and mental health, and barriers to education, employment and everyday life. The discussion also highlighted the fragmented and inconsistent nature of current provision, resulting in a postcode lottery that leaves too many people without the support they urgently need.
We welcome the shared recognition of the need for stronger national leadership and a clear national strategy to improve oversight, reduce delays and ensure consistent, reliable access to essential wheelchair and community equipment for everyone, wherever they live.
We are grateful for the continued engagement and support shown in the Lords, and for helping to ensure that lived experience remains at the forefront of this important issue.
